Guide / Turned away?

Why a mailing can be turned away

A Post Office can only accept an EDDM Retail mailing that meets the rules. Here are the rules that trip people up, grouped by when you can still fix them.

Fix before printing

  • Wrong size. The piece has to be longer than 10.5 inches, taller than 6.125 inches or thicker than 0.25 inches, and no bigger than 15 x 12 x 0.75. A 6 x 9 card doesn't qualify.
  • Too heavy. 3.3 ounces is the Retail limit. Weigh a printed sample.
  • Too thin. USPS's tool guide says pieces must be at least 0.007 inches thick.
  • Missing or misplaced indicia. It goes top right, above and to the right of the address.
  • Wrong address line. "Postal Customer" or "Residential Customer", matching what you ordered.
  • Personal content. No names, no bills, nothing handwritten or typewritten.

Fix at home

  • Bundles too big or too small. 50 to 100 pieces each, no taller than 6 inches.
  • Bundles mixing routes. Each route is bundled separately.
  • Missing facing slips. One on top of each bundle, under the straps, with the piece count written on it.

Fix at the counter (or before you leave)

  • No PS Form 3587, or the carrier route information on the back is blank.
  • No payment. Bring your online receipt or pay at the counter.
  • Wrong Post Office. Check the drop-off location in your order.

Fix in the tool

  • Over the daily limit. 5,000 pieces per day per ZIP Code. Old unpaid "pay at Post Office" orders can count toward it, so cancel any you won't use.
What's the most common EDDM mistake?

Printing a size that doesn't qualify. 6 x 9 is the classic one. Check your size before you order printing.

Can I fix bundles at the Post Office?

Ask the Post Office. It's far easier to bundle correctly at home, using the counts from your order.

Do I need the forms if I paid online?

Yes. Bring PS Form 3587 and your receipt along with the facing slips.
